Close Accounts at Other Financial Institutions

After you have opened your new account(s) at Alaska Pacific, you will probably want to close your old accounts.  It will simplify your money management and make it easier to monitor your account activity.

Reserving Funds in Your Old Account

Make sure you leave enough funds in those accounts to cover any outstanding checks.  Also, it can take up to four weeks for some companies to change information on your automatic payments, and you want to make sure you have sufficient funds in the old account during the transition.

When to Use the Close Account Form

Once the accounts are no longer active (everything has cleared) and you have started receiving any automatic deposits in your new account, and you know that your automatic withdrawals/payments are scheduled to be withdrawn from your new account, send the “Close Account” form and request that any balances be sent directly to you.

Don’t Forget—Protect Yourself

Finally, make sure you destroy old checks, ATM/check cards, and deposit slips so someone cannot get a hold of them and use them fraudulently.

Some agencies or businesses may require that you use their forms.  You may want to double check if you have any concerns.
