American Bankers Association Name Used in Phishing Scheme
November 24, 2008
A new phishing scheme that uses ABA's name to trick the unwary into disclosing confidential security information related to their savings and checking accounts is making the rounds, ABA has learned. The perpetrators place ads in local newspapers seeking to hire survey takers to evaluate local banks. Applicants are sent a package that appears to be from ABA and includes an elaborate survey and a list of bank branches. Survey takers are instructed to go to their assigned bank, open an account with their own money, and then forward the completed survey, along with account and security information, to an address in South Carolina.
ABA is in no way affiliated with this bogus "survey" and is working with law enforcement officials to track down the individuals behind the attempted fraud. Anyone who encounters this or a similar "phish" are asked to contact the American Bankers Association and their local FBI field office.
